SENUI (セヌイ)
The vertical line running down the center of the back
In kimono and tailored clothing,
it is a technique where the two pieces of fabric are sewn together at the center of the back
“seam”
Using a cultural tailoring method imbued with various traditions, not just as a technique,
we propose new clothing
Designer: Hiroyuki Kato
Based on experience in production and planning for leading shirt brands in Japan and overseas, the shirt brand senui was launched in 2022. Everything from design and pattern making to sewing is done by myself. By studying various vintage items from Japan, America, and Europe, I create new ways of making shirts.
"RoomyShirt"
Back seam:
The usual side seams are eliminated, and the garment is sewn together only at the back. Because there are no seams at the sides, the fabric falls naturally along the sides. The yoke is designed as a split yoke so that a clean vertical seam line runs down the back.
Roomy shirt is a boxy silhouette shirt with a generous fit.
Stitching:
Fine stitching with 24 stitches per 30mm. The stitching of a regular shirt is around 15–18 stitches per 30mm, while for dress shirts, it is considered to be in that range when it exceeds 21–22 stitches.
Collar:
Uses a thin and soft 100% cotton interlining. The shape of the collar and cuffs is refined to create an elegant curve.
Sleeves:
2Two-piece sleeve construction. The pattern is manipulated to achieve a forward-leaning sleeve. Furthermore, by removing the sleeve placket and applying a special vent opening at the sleeve join, the cuffs are finished with a clean look.
Armhole:
Because there are no side seams, the sleeves are attached to the body from the back, but they are attached tilted forward to create a line that follows the arm.
Buttons:
Natural mother-of-pearl buttons are used. The pattern is designed without placing buttons on the collar stand so that the collar opens cleanly and beautifully. It is set so that even when the first button is undone, it opens to a moderate degree, creating a relaxed shirt look.
Collar area:
The fabric insert for the collar stand, used for reinforcement in vintage shirts, is incorporated. Antique French linen is used for the insert fabric.
Brand tag:
The brand tag is inspired by a hanging scroll of ink wash painting. It is subtle enough that you might not notice it at first glance, but the image is created using white and light gray threads.
The brand logo arranges the characters vertically, like Japanese, which is a rare vertical language in the world. The material used is Bemberg, a regenerated fiber made from cotton.
Fabric:
<Mixed Yarn Washer Cloth>
Uses a specially blended yarn of 3 materials: wool, cotton, and linen. In addition to the beautiful color variations unique to this three-way blend, it features a lightweight, crisp texture. Furthermore, by washing the fabric, a natural crinkle effect is created, resulting in a unique material with a rich expression.
