LAFABLIGHT
A thin rope is strung across a 5mm-thick sheet with numerous slits. LAFABLIGHT is a new brand launched in France in 2021. It has a warm texture and simple structure, but the shape of the frame and the way the ropes cross give it an original and cool look.
The project is being managed by Laurent Rousseau and Cyril Mayet, who are based in Chartres, a city in central France. Laurent is a talented director who has worked with many creators in the advertising industry, while Cyril is a talented designer who has worked in a wide range of fields, including editorial and interior design.
Cyril, who has a deep knowledge of vintage items, was a fan of lampshades made in Scandinavia in the 1950s and 1960s, which are made of wooden frames wrapped with string. The familiar and rustic look is attractive, but it is a little too pastoral for modern spaces and lacks freshness.
Is it possible to find a new direction for design while retaining the essence of vintage items? It all began when Laurent, a longtime friend of Cyril's, saw him repeatedly making prototypes of various shapes with his own hands and asked, "Could this be developed into an actual product?"

The company is committed to making its products in France, and the materials are cut from oak, poplar, beech and other trees that grow in a forest about 200 kilometers west of Paris. Since the pieces need to be assembled while adjusting the subtle tension, the assembly and weaving are done carefully by hand one by one at a furniture workshop in Japan.
The shades come in five basic shapes, but by changing the arrangement of the threads to create a complex geometric pattern, there are a total of 60 different patterns for the Lafa Bright. The silhouette changes when the light is on and off. Another feature is that it shows different expressions depending on the viewing angle.
