LAFABLIGHT
LAFABLIGHT is a new brand launched in France in 2021. It is made of a 5mm-thick sheet with multiple slits and multiple layers of thin rope stretched across it. Despite its warm texture and simple structure, the shape of the frame and the way the ropes cross give it an original and cool look.
The project is being undertaken by Laurent Rousseau and Cyril Maillet, both of whom are based in Chartres, a city in central France. Laurent is a talented director who has worked with many creatives in the advertising industry, while Cyril is a talented designer who has worked in a wide range of fields, including editorial and interior design.
Cyril, who has a deep knowledge of vintage items, was a fan of lampshades made in Scandinavia in the 1950s and 1960s, which were made by wrapping string around a wooden frame. The familiar, rustic look is appealing, but it seems a little too pastoral for a modern space, lacking freshness.
Is it possible to find a new design direction while retaining the essence of vintage? It all began when Laurent, a longtime friend of Cyril, saw him repeatedly prototyping various shapes with his own hands and asked, "Couldn't this be developed into an actual product?"

Committed to being made in France, the materials are cut from oak, poplar, beech, and other trees that grow in the forests about 200 kilometers west of Paris. Because the pieces need to be assembled while adjusting the delicate tension, the assembly and weaving are carefully done by hand, one by one, at a furniture workshop in Japan.
The shades come in five basic shapes, but by changing the arrangement of the threads to resemble complex geometric patterns, Lafa Bright offers a total of 60 different patterns. The silhouette changes when the light is on and off. Another feature is that it shows different expressions depending on the angle from which you look at it.
