PETROSOLAUM
The brand PETROSOLAUM was launched in the 2012-13 AW season.
The brand aims to create products that fuse the functionality of footwear intended to protect the feet with the artistry of an art piece at a high level.
Out of respect for the animals whose materials are used, the brand crafts shoes by reflecting new challenges and unique philosophies, based on traditional manufacturing methods inherited to bring out the best in the materials' properties and characteristics.
The brand name is a portmanteau of the word "Petroleum" and the designer's name, Sotaro.
The fingerprint mark on the insole, modeled after oil-stained fingertips, carries the message of a commitment to handwork and a deep, thoughtful approach to craftsmanship.
"side gore cordovan butt"
These side-gore boots are designed with German Jäger elastic gore sewn onto the outer leather, specifically to prevent the sagging that occurs with rubber over years of wear. By minimizing the shaping of the upper and utilizing a unique, exquisite length, the upper fits snugly against the instep, providing both a secure hold and a beautiful silhouette. The top instep section uses the cordovan layer, while the side and rear sections use suede, allowing you to enjoy the aging process as the textures of these different parts of the same material evolve uniquely.
The sole is finished with details seen in highly crafted bespoke footwear. The outsole includes a leather half-midsole, thinned out toward the toe, which creates a fluid appearance while providing functionality that aids in pushing off the ground while walking. The arch is built up (fiddle back) and the edge is polished with a hot iron, transitioning from a flat edge to a rounded edge toward the arch, enhancing both the sharpness of the look and the fit to the sole of the foot. The leather heel is hand-shaped by carving, resulting in an asymmetrical form with a difference between the inner and outer sides. Wooden pegs (nails) are driven into the sole and polished for a finished look.
This model comes with a removable original insole, which serves to compensate for fit variations caused by the compression of the midsole as the shoes are broken in.
Material: "Cordovan butt"
An original material that includes the cordovan layer and the surrounding suede-like sections. This is full-vegetable-tanned horse butt leather, tanned in natural cedar wood pits at a traditional tannery in Himeji, Japan. By intentionally using both the oil-impregnated cordovan layer and the surrounding butt section, the leather features a distinct contrast in textures within a single piece.
Last: "No.03"
A last (shoe mold) for PETROSOLAUM’s high-end line, created using bespoke techniques. With inspiration drawn from antique lasts, such as archival military lasts, this mold expresses a modern classicism—a universal shape refined through the filter of PETROSOLAUM.
